Custom Cheese Paper
Request Custom Quote
Cheese paper is a specialized wrap used to preserve the aroma and texture of cheese. This paper balances the moisture and breathability of the paper and preserves the quality of cheese. The paper usually consists of multiple parts, such as
- Kraft inner paper that gives the mechanical strength
- A micro-perforated coating of polyethylene and wax
The quality of the paper directly influences the quality of cheese. When you select the customization option, you can get a paper that controls the gaseous exchange of the paper and prevents moisture loss. As one of the renowned cheese paper wholesale manufacturers in the USA, we also add some innovative features, such as calcium carbonate. They inhibit the growth of the bacteria and regulate the humidity of cheese.
Production Of Modern Cheese Paper
Previously, people relied on natural materials to preserve the paper, such as cloth. It was a reasonably good method to preserve the loaves and wheels of cheese during transport. However, the use of cloth was not an ideal way of preservation. That is why in the late 20th century, food scientists and packaging engineers collaborated to create a paper that has breathability and moisture control. Two-ply paper was created that contained an inner parchment paper-type layer and an external breathable layer. This became an industrial standard, and experts such as Janet Fletcher endorsed wax paper for cheese storage due to its superior storage performance.
Raw Materials and Chemical Composition
Cheesemongers all around the world prefer custom paper designed for cheese because it prevents the cheese from condensation and spoilage. Angie DiMeo of East Side Cheese says that micro-perforated cheese wraps extend the freshness of cheese by days as compared to plastic wraps. The efficiency of the paper depends on the types and quality of raw materials used in the manufacturing. Bleached or unbleached kraft paper is used as a base paper over which coating and additives are added. We also add calcium carbonate to inhibit microbial growth and to enhance hydroxide balance to maintain the pH for cheese preservation.
The production steps of cheese wrapping paper involve the following:
- Pulp Preparation
- Sheet Formation
- Drying and Calendaring
- Coating Application
- Slitting and Rewinding
Cheese paper wrap producers may produce a paper with variable formulation, such as the addition of food grade surfactants and slip against along with anti-oxidant coatings. These additional formulations optimize the barrier properties for specific cheese formulations.
Coatings And Specific Applications
The addition of coatings is to enhance the surface properties of cheese storage paper by offering a high moisture barrier. The application of coatings is based on the requirements of the customers. Some of the options include the following:
- Micro‑Perforated Polyethylene: This coating provided a high moisture barrier with controlled gas exchange. It is a perfect option for semi-hard and hard cheeses.
- Wax Coatings: Food-grade wax is used that provides breathable moisture control for soft and mold-ripened cheeses.
- Propylene Films: When a customer needs 1-ply paper, then for tear resistance and greaseproof properties, we apply this coating.
When To Use Coated Vs. Uncoated Paper
If you have to store the cheese for long-term and food display purposes, then coated variants of custom printed cheese paper are recommended as they minimize the mold risk and moisture loss. Uncoated parchment paper or wax paper is sufficient for short-term wrapping, like for 1 to 2 days in the refrigerator. However, they will lack the barrier properties of the coated one.
Printing On The Paper
Printed cheese paper is used mainly for commercial purposes. With this paper, brands can promote themselves and also get the attention of the customers due to an attractive presentation. No matter what purpose you need the paper for. You must make sure that the printed ink used on the paper is food-grade. For this purpose, we give our customers the following options:
- Soy-based inks
- Water-based inks
